Top Unrated Comedy Movies That Are Full of Surprises

Because 2021 was...you know, stressful, we all need a little extra comedy. (opens in new tab) There are not one but two quarantine films on here, and there are also some pretty solid metaphors for the past year: Reliving the same day over and over! Desperately needing a vacation! Getting stuck inside an abandoned funhouse and having to fight the demonic animatronics! (Nicolas Cage is starring in that one, which makes perfect sense.) There are also some new comedy films to watch out for, including a new Judd Apatow movie, as well as some up-and-coming comic actors like Kathryn Newton.

The highly-anticipated live-action/animated sports comedy featuring Lebron James in all of his basketball glory will be released this summer. In the movie, James attempts to save his son by helping the Looney Tunes win a basketball match.

We knew there would be some quarantine movies, but this packs quite a bit of star power with Ejiofor and Hathaway as a couple who are thisclose to getting a divorce when COVID-19 hits. Stuck at home for what feels like an eternity (ugh), they hatch a plan to solve their financial problems...and maybe rediscover what they liked about each other in the first place. It's not exactly a heist film, but minus the stealing of a multi-million-dollar diamond, it's absolutely relatable.

This might be the most divisive film of 2021? There's basically no in-between with this: You either love-to-hate Pike as her character defrauds senior citizens, or you just hate her. This is the definition of black comedy, and it's not for everyone, but Pike post-Gone Girl plays merrily abhorrent to perfection.

One of the most underrated aspects of some Marvel movies is their sense of humor (see also: Thor: Ragnarok, basically Chris Hemsworth doing standup). The Spider-Man films benefit from this as well as a cheerfully earnest Holland delivering them. No spoilers, but the ending of the second film takes the story in new directions, which should help it feel fresh.

The classic comedy Coming to America finally got a sequel this year, over 30 years since the heartfelt original. Prince Akeem of Zamunda (Murphy) is about to ascend the throne when he discovers that he has a son (Fowler) from a one night stand during his time in Queens, NY. The man comes to Zamunda to be trained as an heir to the throne, to the dismay of Akeem's daughter (Layne).

In his latest hilarious action-comedy, Reynolds is a background character in a jam-packed video game. One day, he breaks his pattern and falls for a player, Molotov Girl (Comer), who recruits him to break apart the game from the inside.

The 2013 HBO comedy film Clear History is in some ways a natural prequel to tech-bro comedy series Silicon Valley. As a matter of fact one of the writers on the film, Alec Berg, is now an executive producer for Silicon Valley. The premise is familiar.

Hell, the title of Landline sounds like pretty much the most ancient thing in all of moviedom. Regardless of the timeframe, infidelity may not seem like the funniest topic for a comedy but Landline is able to tell a compelling story of familial drama while being a light and funny blast from the past.

After Election, Director Alexander Payne would go on to do incredible Oscar-winning work like About Schmidt, Sideways and The Descendants. Election, however, might be the best calling card for his talent. Election is a black comedy about a high school election gone haywire.

NC-17 movies have long fascinated film fans. Back in 1990, the MPAA (The Motion Picture Association of America) replaced the X rating with NC-17 because X had become synonymous with pornography. Unfortunately, even when changed to NC-17, the stigma of the rating still lingered and made almost impossible to place these movies in theaters.

Numerous high-profile movies like American Psycho, Saw, Boys Don't Cry, and Goodfellas all had to alter or cut scenes in order to get their NC-17 ratings changed to an R. Some films, however, threw caution to the wind, stood up against censorship, and refused to change. These films went on to be released with an NC-17 rating or were released as Unrated.

Updated on December 5th, 2021 by Keith Langston: Luckily, in recent years, many filmgoers have become more welcoming and accepting of NC-17 and Unrated movies, and the two ratings are no longer the "kiss of death" they used to be in earlier decades.

The film is filled with backstabbing, assault, blackmail, and even murder. Showgirls received tons of negative press before release due to its nudity and violence. Though it was a box-office bomb, the movie went on to be popular at video stores and became one of MGM's highest-grossing movies in the rental market.

The movie interviews numerous filmmakers who had to fight the MPAA such as Matt Stone, John Waters, and Kevin Smith. Ironically, since the movie shows clips from NC-17 movies to help prove its point, the MPAA slapped the documentary with an NC-17 rating as well.

In 2011, Shame helped reframe how audiences viewed NC-17 movies. The movie starred Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan as two play siblings, Brandon and Sissy Sullivan, both of whom have unhealthy sexual addictions.

After the success of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, filmmaker John Cameron Mitchell created Shortbus, a film about a sex club in Brooklyn that was inspired by New York's real underground sex parties. The movie blends comedy, drama, and eroticism. It follows an ensemble cast, exploring their reasonings for attending the club and the people they are outside of it.

Bad Lieutenant is one of the few NC-17 movies to get its rating due to pervasive violence and drug use almost exclusively. The film has been banned twice in Ireland, first during its theatrical release, and later with the DVD release, and an R-Rated cut was developed specifically for rental outlets.

The Evil Dead was originally given an X rating because of its intense amount of gore, although, these days, the cheesy effects make the movie come off as more of a campy comedy than a horror. In the 90s, when the MPAA changed the X rating to NC-17, The Evil Dead was slapped with the dreaded rating.

Luckily, being an NC-17 movie never hurt The Evil Dead (likely due to the fact that it had been released years beforehand). It's consistently hailed as one of the greatest horror movies ever made, as well as one of Sam Raimi's best movies, and filmmakers like Eli Roth cite The Evil Dead as being their inspiration for entering the horror genre.

The movie is a slapstick comedy and doesn't actually contain a single explicit sex scene. Regardless, the MPAA gave it an NC-17 simply for its continual references to sex. In reality, the movie is a raunchy comedy, mocking our perceived norms of intimacy and fetishes. It's hilarious, witty, and like all things John Waters, outrageous.

It starred the legendary drag queen, Divine, who even ate real dog feces onscreen in the film. The movie also included kidnapping, rape, murder, necrophilia, infantilism, human trafficking, and more. For decades, and even well into the new millennium, Pink Flamingoes was deemed to be the raunchiest movie ever made. It also led to a whole series of offensive and hilarious movies that John Waters would become known for.

The directorial debut of Karen Maine in 2019, Yes, God, Yes follows the story of Natalia Dryer as Alice, a Catholic school teen chastised for her (rumored) interest in sex. In an effort to thwart her sexual awakening, Alice attends a retreat that only further propels her exploration of pleasure. The comedy was well-received by critics and audiences and hailed as one of the best movies of 2020. Wolfgang Novogratz, Alisha Boe, and Timothy Simons also appear in the movie.

Funny People is a 2009 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Judd Apatow, co-produced by Apatow Productions and Madison 23 Productions, and starring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann with Eric Bana, Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman in supporting roles. The film follows a famous comedian who is diagnosed with a terminal disease and tries to fix the relationships in his life while befriending an aspiring comedian.

George Simmons is a middle-aged retired stand-up comedian turned movie star. Despite his wealth, he is disillusioned and depressed as most of his recent film work is low-brow and poorly received. Diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, he is offered an experimental treatment that has only an 8% success rate. Believing he is about to die, he returns to his roots of stand-up comedy.

Ira Wright is an aspiring stand-up comedian in his 20s, sharing an apartment with his two best friends, Mark and Leo. Mark successfully leads his own TV comedy series. Leo is a rising comedy star and recurring guest star on Mark's TV show.

George meets Ira at a small comedy club, first hiring him as his assistant, Ira becomes one of his only close relationships. Later he becomes his joke writer, opening for him in big comedy clubs, often meeting with real life comedians who talk about the business.

Comedians Orny Adams, Dave Attell, Andy Dick, Charles Fleischer, Budd Friedman, Monty Hoffman, Carol Leifer, Al Lubel, Norm Macdonald, Rod Man, Jerry Minor, Paul Reiser, Ray Romano, Mark Schiff, Sarah Silverman, and George Wallace had cameos as themselves in the roles of George's fellow comedians,[5] while comedians Tyler Spindel and Kyle Kinane respectively played a college guy with a camera and a paparazzo at the medical center. Rapper Eminem,[6] musician James Taylor,[7] and Myspace founder Tom Anderson also briefly appeared as themselves. Musicians Jon Brion, James Gadson, and Sebastian Steinberg appeared in the film as members of George's jam band. Actress Carla Gallo and comedian Bo Burnham[8] appeared as characters on Yo Teach!, the television show within the film which stars Mark,[9] while Justin Long and Apatow regular Ken Jeong had cameos as characters in the movies for which George is famous.[10] In the film, the posters for George's films also featured actors Owen Wilson and Elizabeth Banks on them.[11] Actors Steve Bannos and Elaine Kao had small roles respectively as a deli manager and a mom with a camera. 2ff7e9595c
